Inspired by this picture, Avery and I made our own little light boats and launched them on the dark waters of the pond, in honor of the new year. It was also a good excuse to slide on wet leaves in the dark.
“I rise today
with the power of God to pilot me,
God’s strength to sustain me,
God’s wisdom to guide me…”
-St Patrick’s breastplate
In the evening, we folded the little boats, taped on tea-lights and attached flags, then set our clocks for 5 AM….

We were amazed at how long they floated and how long the candles burned, even in the sprinkling rain!
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask you to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
Sir Francis Drake
We decided the “light boats” would become tradition and maybe next time I can even find a way to float a cake…. Angus just might jump in for that!
May God make us brave little vessels of light in this dark world!
